I AM NOT AN OPEN BOOK actor applications

We are looking for a few non-binary/trans performers to workshop and performing a new show.  The workshop/rehearsals will take place in in april and the performance in april (exact dates TBA).  we are looking for theatre makers with a strong voice and experience with physical and spoken theatre.

SYNPOSIS:

“I am not an open book” is a new play that reworks fairytales and dystopia to explore what we gain to lose from the censoring of books. In June 2021, Hungary passed a law banning LGBTQ+ “propaganda”, leading to the wrapping of targeted books in shops and the implementation of hefty fines. A major book targeted was the children’s story collection, “A Fairytale For Everyone”, shredded live on TV by a right-wing politician for promoting gender non-conforming characters and other minorities within traditional Hungarian folk stories. “I am not an open book” adapts this current day context by bringing to life one of these short stories, with the permission of editor Boldizsár M. Nagy, while also dramatising the gradual degradation of book-selling rights from the perspective of a worker on the shop floor.

This show is paid through profitshare.

Fruitcake Productions acknowledges the traditional Owners of the land on which we create, work and live; the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation and pay our respects to Elders of this land. We recognise the past atrocities against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this land and the lost of language, communities and story due to genocide and dispossession.  Sovereignty has never been ceded. It always was and always will be, Aboriginal land.

We also acknowledge the role of English institutions past and present in global colonisation and oppression. As a company we aim to engage with and resist continued colonial structures within the theatre space and beyond. We thrive to make Fruitcake Productions a Safe, Inclusive and Diverse for Theatre Makers Everywhere.
